Your Trimble ID password is the first line of defense when it comes to protecting your account. All Trimble ID passwords must contain the following:
- At least 8 characters
- At least one uppercase letter
- At least one lowercase letter
- At least one number
- One of these special characters: !@#$%^&*_-+
Trimble will not ask you to reset your password and you can always change your password at any time.
Long passwords with strings of random characters can be considered strong, but can also be hard to remember. One alternative to a traditional password is a passphrase. Passphrases are a series of words that make a short sentence or phrase that may only make sense to you. You can then use that phrase as a password. An example of a passphrase would be:
SketchUp_is_@wesome!
Using a passphrase offers the following benefits over a traditional password:
- Easier to remember. A memorable quote or a nonsense rhyme from childhood is much easier to remember than a random string of letters and numbers.
- Harder to crack. Modern cyber-criminals have ways to crack even the most complicated traditional passwords. Due to their length, passphrases are statistically proven to be more resistant to both human and robot attacks.
- Easily meets requirements. A phrase often uses a lot of different characters that satisfy even the strictest password requirements.
Here’s a few guidelines to follow when creating a passphrase:
- Use something unique and memorable to you. Base your password on a childhood memory, a favorite food, or a memorable experience.
- The longer the better. Since passphrases rely on length for security instead of complexity, any passphrase should be at least 12 characters long. Every character over 12 improves the safety of your passphrase.
- Do not use well-known or common phrases. A line from the National Anthem may be memorable to you, but it is to a lot of other folks as well. The same can be said for quotes from famous people, famous lines from books, or pop culture idioms.
