SketchUp subscribers can import and export models using a wide variety of formats. Listed below are some common issues you may encounter and how to handle them.

My imported .dwg or .dxf is missing some objects from the original model.

Any AEC objects, a type of advanced component in AutoCAD, do not display in SketchUp. To make sure these objects import:

  1. Open the file in AutoCAD
  2. Orbit the model to get out of plan view
  3. Select all objects
  4. Explode your selection
  5. Save the file

The scale of objects in my exported file doesn’t match the scale in the original SketchUp model.

To preserve the scale of your model when exporting, follow these steps:

  1. In the Menu, click Camera > Parallel Projection
  2. Open the Scenes panel and click Update Scene
  3. In the window that appears, click Update
  4. Save your file
  5. Initiate your export.
  6. In the export options, make sure you are choosing the appropriate AutoCAD version. For 2D exports, make sure Full Scale is selected.

My imported SketchUp file is blank!

If you can’t see your imported model, it may still be there but far away from the drawing axes. If you open the Outliner panel, you should see the different objects in your model listed there. Select one of the objects and use Zoom Selection to locate your model.

To avoid this from happening, move your geometry as close to the origin point before you export it. For more information, take a look at the file preparation tips in Importing and Exporting CAD Files.
