Learners seeking to become Certified SketchUp Users in any of the three recognized certification levels will participate in an exam overview course and take an exam appropriate to the level of certification being sought.

Exams and evaluations will progressively test learners’ skills, representing the adult learning journey across these three developmental stages:

Memory and UnderstandingApplication and AnalysisEvaluation & Synthesis

Ability to recall basic facts, concepts, and ideas. Able to identify common functions, purposes, and UX/UI locations

“Summarize”

Ability to use information in new settings, draw connections by experimentation, breakdown workflows into their elemental functions

“Analyze”

Develop and design new outputs with known skillsets, the ability to appraise and judge various workflows to suit intended outcomes. Synthesis of knowledge

“Synthesize”

The SketchUp skills index organizes proficiency with SketchUp into five distinct skill categories:

ModelingOrientationOrganizationVisualEnablement
Refers to operations that directly create or modify geometrical elements within SketchUp.Interface proficiency, Familiarity with interface menus, function and tool locations for basic to advanced modeling options. The functions and tools within SketchUp that allow users to organize and maintain a high level of detail and object control within their model. All functionality with a visual-based intention. Scenes and Styles, Materiality, animation, Rendering, Etc.Learning resources and extensible awareness. This category includes skills that take a learner beyond core SketchUp tools

For more information, see the full SketchUp Training Standards and Outcomes.

There are three exams, each testing those skill categories and representing a specific level of knowledge:

  • Exam 1: SketchUp Certified Basic User – The Basic User exam focuses on the learners ability to recall basic tool functions and concepts. The learner will show they understand the most common tools and foundational modeling methods. This includes awareness of intermediate workflows and other SketchUp products like 3D Warehouse and LayOut.
  • Exam 2: SketchUp Certified Intermediate User – The Intermediate User exam focuses less on memorization and more on workflow analysis, advanced functionality, and the advanced tool workflows. This exam mixes knowledge-based questions and simulations.
  • Exam 3: SketchUp Certified Advanced or Industry User – The Advanced User exam assesses the learners ability to use all of SketchUp’s tools and resources to produce complex technical designs. This exam mixes knowledge-based questions and independent work.
