Hardware Acceleration

Hardware acceleration can improve SketchUp’s rendering performance. Supported browsers provide a setting to use hardware acceleration when available. Windows users can also assign high performance graphics to your browser in your operating system’s settings.

Hardware Acceleration Browser Settings

Turning on hardware acceleration depends on which browser you use for SketchUp for Web.

Google Chrome

To use hardware acceleration in Google Chrome, launch your browser and follow these steps:

  1. Open the menu and select Settings.
  2. Select System.
  3. Activate the toggle next to Use Hardware Acceleration When Available.
  4. Restart your browser.

Microsoft Edge

To use hardware acceleration in Microsoft Edge, launch your browser and follow these steps:

  1. Open the menu and select Settings.
  2. Select System.
  3. Activate the toggle next to Use Hardware Acceleration When Available.
  4. Click Restart.

Assigning High Performance Graphics

Windows 10

To assign high performance graphics to your browser in Windows 10, follow these steps:

  1. Open the Start menu and use the search option to find “Graphics Settings”.
  2. Select Desktop App from the drop down menu and click Browse.
  3. Browse the File Manager and select your preferred browser’s .exe file. Typical file paths for Chrome and Edge are:
    • Chrome: C:\Program Files\Google\Chrome\Application
    • Edge: C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Edge\Application
  4. After selecting a browser, click Options.
  5. Select High Performance and click Save.
  6. If your browser is open, close and restart it for changes to take effect.

Windows 11

To assign high performance graphics to your browser in Windows 11, follow these steps.

  1. Open the Start menu and use the search option to find “Graphics Settings”.
  2. Under Custom Settings for Applications locate your preferred browser. If your browser doesn’t appear on the list of applications, click Add Desktop App.
  3. Browse the File Manager and select your preferred browser’s .exe file. Typical file paths for Chrome and Edge are:
    • Chrome: C:\Program Files\Google\Chrome\Application
    • Edge: C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Edge\Application
  4. Next to GPU Preference, use the drop down to select High Performance.
  5. If your browser is open, close and restart it for changes to take effect.
