Performing a Clean Install

A clean installation is sometimes the best way to resolve a few different issues encountered when running SketchUp. A clean installation requires removal of all existing SketchUp background files and folders in addition to uninstalling SketchUp. How you perform a clean installation depends on your operating system. 

Note: Performing a clean installation will remove any customizations such as templates, materials, styles, and components. 

Windows

To perform a clean installation of SketchUp on Windows, follow these steps: 

  1. Use Search to find and open Add/Remove Programs. 
  2. Locate the SketchUp app in the list of installed apps.
  3. Click next to SketchUp and select Uninstall.
  4. Open the File Explorer. 
  5. Search for and delete the following files:
    • C:\Program Files\SketchUp2024
    • C:\ProgramData\SketchUp2024
    • C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\SketchUp2024
    • C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\SketchUp2024
Note: These files may be hidden. Show hidden files by following these instructions
  1. Reinstall SketchUp using the offline installer found here

MacOS

To perform a clean installation of SketchUp on MacOS follow these steps: 

  1. Open the Applications folder. 
  2. Locate SketchUp and move it to Trash. 
  3. Open Finder. 
  4. Click Go
  5. Hold down Option to reveal hidden options and click Library.
  6. Open the Application Support folder. 
  7. Move all SketchUp folders to Trash. 
  8. Go back to the Library and open the Preferences folder. 
  9. Move any SketchUp file ending in .plist to Trash. 
  10. Empty the Trash. 
  11. Reinstall SketchUp using the offline installer found here .

After Performing a Clean Installation:

Open SketchUp and make sure it is working as expected. Do not install any extensions until you are sure SketchUp is back up and running. If everything looks good, install any extensions one at a time and only use the latest installer. Make sure each extension is compatible with the current version of SketchUp. After installing each extension, make sure SketchUp is still working as intended before installing the next one to make sure the extension isn’t causing any errors.
